The PioÂneer MonÂuÂment comÂmemÂoÂrates resÂiÂdents of WhitÂtiÂer who have passed away. Flags fly above the monÂuÂment and names are added periÂodÂiÂcalÂly, as long-time resÂiÂdents pass.
In 1943, The Army Corps of EngiÂneers built a monÂuÂment comÂmemÂoÂratÂing the effort of buildÂing the 2.5 mile long tunÂnel through the solÂid rock of MayÂnard to realÂize the vision of WhitÂtiÂer as a year-round ice-free port. The monÂuÂment was recentÂly restored in a new locaÂtion with the origÂiÂnal plaque.
The monÂuÂment, a plaque on a 13-ton rock, can be found in the town’s TriÂanÂgle busiÂness disÂtrict amidst a wild rose garÂden. It’s a tribÂute to those who It’s a fitÂting tribÂute to those who lost their lives durÂing the 1964 earthquake.
