We were longtime Anchorage residents (just an hour away), and then bought a condo in Whittier in 2013 to spend weekends out on the water in our small boat. Along the way, we fell in love with the community and the proximity to the outdoors, and we moved here full-time in 2015

Cordova: Lauren Padawer

I moved to Cordova 19 years ago. I was 23 years old and I had traveled extensively. The first time I visited Cordova, two years prior, left a huge imprint. It was the first place I had traveled where I could still speak English and use American money, but the scenery and culture was as enchanting as more exotic places I’d visited.

Valdez: Vince & Jennie Kelley

We love that we can step off our porch and put in a kayak. We have the water and the mountains—the best of both worlds. Our house is off the grid; you have to hike to it. It has a remote feel, but we’re still right in the community. Valdez is the gateway to the Sound, but it’s also an authentic fishing town.
