Traveling to Alaska with Little Kids: Family Adventures for Ages 0–5

Traveling to Alaska with young children? There’s something magical about seeing Alaska through your child’s eyes— spotting a bald eagle, watching a moose beside the road, or simply picking up pebbles on a beach with glacier views. The experience doesn’t have to be high-octane to be high-impact. With the right pace, Alaska becomes the perfect place for families to bond, explore, and relax in nature.

Whether you're traveling with a baby in a carrier or a curious preschooler, Alaska offers short excursions, stroller-friendly paths, and wildlife experiences that don’t require roughing it.

And perhaps best of all, Alaska’s welcoming communities and open spaces make it easy to adjust plans for naps, snacks, or those “we just need a minute” moments.

When to Go

Summer (June through August) is the ideal season for families with babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers. You’ll find the warmest weather, the most open attractions, and long daylight hours that make it easier to be flexible with schedules. May and September can also work, and may offer less-crowded experiences while school is in session for families with older kids.

If you’re interested in a winter vacation, they’re often better for older pre-schoolers who can participate in activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, sledding or tubing, ice fishing, and maybe staying up late one night to see the aurora (as long as there’s a recovery day planned!).

It’s all about a mix of adventure and easygoing fun. A great itinerary might start with a few days in Anchorage—think playgrounds, the zoo, and hands-on museum time—then head to Seward by car or train for wildlife cruises and more hands-on fun at the Alaska SeaLife Center. Denali adds a dose of wild wonder with short hikes, wildlife spotting, and kid-friendly ranger talks. Keep things flexible, leave time for snacks and naps, and you’ll find the journey is just as fun as the destination.
