Chasing light and wildlife in Sitka Sound—small boats, big moments, unforgettable shots.

The waters around the town of Sitka feature a rich collection of marine wildlife that’s the perfect inspiration for small-group photography workshops from Sitka Wonders. You’ll set off on a comfortable, intimate boat and get instruction from award-winning natural history cinematographer and photographer Ben Hamilton, who’s filmed in more than 36 countries for National Geographic, BBC, and Smithsonian.

In these workshops, you’ll explore the remote islands and marine habitats of Sitka Sound, home to whales, sea otters, puffins, eagles, brown bears, and rich intertidal life. Seasonal events, like the spring herring spawn, summer feeding whales, and late-season salmon migration also offer unique photographic opportunities.

All skill levels will get a lot out of these excursions whether you’re using the fanciest DSLR or a cameraphone. You’ll learn about reading Alaska’s unique light, understanding wildlife behavior, technical mastery, and using photography to find beauty in everyday life, all while having a blast.

These 3-hour photography workshops take only 6 guests, so you’ll have lots of hands-on instruction. The workshop starts with award-winning photographer Ben Hamilton giving you an introduction to gear, light, and composition. You’ll then board a 6-passenger boat and sail out into the shimmering waters of Sitka Sound. Explore areas like Silver Bay or the islands near St. Lazaria, where you’ll find rich troves of marine life like whales, sea lions, seals, and puffins. Learning from Ben, you’ll pick up skills like how to anticipate movement, read light, and frame your shot so it tells a story.
