Against the stunning background of snow-capped peaks, a humpback whale shoots up above the water’s surface before crashing back down. It’s an experience that you may witness when sailing from Homer to Seldovia with Rainbow Tours—one of the area’s most popular ecotour excursions.

Board one of Rainbow Tours’ two boats in Homer—the only tour boats of their kind in the area—and set off across the waters of Kachemak Bay on a narrated tour that takes you past Gull Island and through Eldred Passage. While most boat tours from Homer focus on fishing or adventure, these scenic trips offer a relaxing educational alternative focused on the gorgeous scenery, abundant wildlife and the local history.

Spend a half or full day on the water, keeping an eye out for seabirds, otters, seals, sea lions, and the occasional humpback whale or orca. Longer tours stop at the idyllic, seaside Alaskan town of Seldovia—accessible only by boat or plane—where you’ll spend a couple hours exploring the historic boardwalk, visiting the museum, or having lunch at one of the local restaurants.

The boats can carry 50 people comfortably—including indoor seating. The entire journey is in protected waters, the vessels are stable enough to make them perfect for travelers of all ages. Also, the experienced captains and passionate deckhands will always be on hand to answer questions and fill you in on what makes this area so special.

Guests enjoy panoramic views from the deck as the boat cruises past Gull Island.
