The chance to witness the otherworldly phenomenon of the aurora borealis is the centerpiece of this 8-day tour in northern Alaska—and you’ll have several evenings to hunt for the mystical northern lights dancing across the sky. But there are plenty of other sights to enjoy along the way as well, like the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, Pioneer Park, and Chena Hot Springs. You’ll also go dog mushing, meet reindeer, and try your hand at the sport of curling.

Day 1

Arrival in Fairbanks

Check in to your hotel in downtown Fairbanks. Then take some time to explore the area’s eclectic shops and restaurants and get yourself in an Alaska state of mind.

Day 2

Pioneer Park

Meet your group and guide for lunch at a local restaurant, then head to Pioneer Park—a 44-acre village with historic buildings and museums. Afterward, travel to your lodge and enjoy dinner while learning about the magical aurora borealis. Your guide to the lights will be there each night to help ensure you don’t miss them, and also takes photos to share.

Day 3

Fairbanks Highlights and Aurora Viewing

Embark on a tour of Fairbanks, stopping at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and the Morris Thompson Cultural Center, which features exhibits on Alaska’s seasons and native traditions. Enjoy a guided walk through the city; after dark, relax at the lodge or go out on a hunt for the famous lights.

Day 4

Museum, Reindeer, and Aurora Watching

Kick off the day exploring exhibits on Alaska’s natural and cultural history at the fascinating Museum of the North. Go meet some reindeer at a local ranch and take a scenic walk through a birch forest. Then get ready for another night with the chance to see the northern lights.

Day 5

Curling, Hiking, and Antique Cars

Try your hand at the unique sport of curling as you take a lesson with local players. Then go on a brisk hike along a scenic trail before stopping by a world-class antique automobile museum with vintage cars and period fashion. Finish off the day Alaska-style by looking for the aurora.

Day 6

Chena Hot Springs and Ice Art

Head to the soothing Chena Hot Springs for a warm soak surrounded by snowy landscapes. Visit the onsite ice sculpture museum to check out the intricate carvings and sip a martini from an ice glass. On the way back to the lodge, look for wildlife and of course the northern lights.

Day 7

Dog Sledding Adventure

Experience an iconic Alaskan dog sled ride and learn about mushing from local guides. Spend the afternoon snowshoeing, do some final shopping, or relax at the lodge.
