Alaska has a state fair. But the Kenai Peninsula has its own — and it's been going longer than most people realize. For over 73 years, the village of Ninilchik on the southern Kenai Peninsula has hosted the annual Kenai Peninsula Fair, drawing around 7,000 visitors each August from communities across the state. It runs Friday through Sunday at the historic Kenai Peninsula Fairgrounds on the Sterling Highway, and the pace of it — unhurried, genuinely local, oriented around community rather than spectacle — is about as far from a corporate festival as you can get.
The centerpiece is the rodeo, produced by Rodeo Alaska out of Anchorage. Bull riding, barrel racing, and a full roster of rodeo events run each day of the fair, with professional-level competition and cash prizes that draw serious contestants from across Alaska and beyond. But the rodeo is only part of it. The fair also features local musical talent, carnival games, horse rides, a petting zoo, and the always-crowd-pleasing pig races — a Kenai Peninsula Fair tradition that never gets old regardless of how many times you've seen it. An educational farm where kids get hands-on time with animals rounds out the family programming, and the exhibit halls fill with entries spanning agriculture, horticulture, baked goods, quilting, photography, woodworking, native art, and more — over 800 entries from Peninsula residents ranging in age from 2 to 90, all competing for blue ribbons and year-long bragging rights.
Ninilchik itself is worth a stop beyond the fair. The Ninilchik Farmers Market runs at the fairgrounds every Sunday in June and July, and the village sits at the mouth of the Ninilchik River where it meets Cook Inlet — a scenic spot with a historic Russian Orthodox church on the bluff that's one of the most-photographed in Alaska. Homer is about 40 miles south, making this an easy add-on to a southern Kenai Peninsula road trip.
