Destination Alaska: 8x8 Argo Adventure Tour

There are regular ATVs, and then there are ATVs built for exploring Alaska: 8 x 8 Argos. These simple to drive, amphibious vehicles make exploring the Alaskan backcountry even more fun—and you can find the unique opportunity to drive one with Destination Alaska, out of Homer. This adventure tour company, run by a longtime local family, also offers a full menu of exciting activities.

On the 8x8 Argo Adventure Tour, you’ll spend 5 hours driving over rugged landscape in this virtually unstoppable vehicle. Argos can take you over terrain that regular ATVs can’t, and they’re more stable than traditional ATVs, which can easily get stuck in the mud. Your 4-person Argo will power through—plus, it comes outfitted with cushy, comfortable seats and a GPS (but don’t worry, your professional guide will always be with you). Argos are easy to learn to drive: Anyone 16 years of age and up can do it, and no experience is necessary!

Climb aboard and set off on this incredibly scenic trail with mountains, glaciers, and alpine meadows to feast your eyes on, while watching out for wildlife like moose and eagles. You’ll travel through some wet, muddy terrain to see it, but fortunately, your machine can take on the challenge.

Your destination is the stunning Caribou Lake, where you’ll break for a hearty lunch of delicious sandwiches. You’ll spend some time exploring out here as well—traveling off-trail and around islands in the muskeg and driving up into the high country for even better views. Then hop back on your Argo for more unforgettable meandering back through forests, swamps, and gorgeous scenery.
