You don't usually expect to find unique, quality gifts at the airport, but this shop in the Ted Stevens Airport is a charming, notable exception.

You will find the work of over 60 Alaska carvers, jewelry makers, mask makers and potters in the Alaska Mercantile. The owners pride themselves on offering an outlet for talented local crafters and artists to sell their wares.

While you'll find a whimsical selection of Alaskan-designed t-shirts, you can also choose from locally made jewelry—from little trinkets to solid, gold-nugget earrings—as well as carved ivory and native crafts such as masks, hand-carved totem poles, sealskin slippers, or even a sealskin yoyo.

The store works with local artists and sells authentic Alaskan art, but you can take a smaller taste of Alaska with you. As a nice alternative to the usual airport candy, pick up a made-in-Alaska chocolate bar for your on-the-go snack.
