Most music festivals cost money. Most are curated from the top down. The Alaska Folk Festival is neither. Organized entirely by volunteers and funded solely by donations and membership dues, it has been held in Juneau every April since 1975 — and in that time it has never charged a single dollar at the door, for performers or for audiences. That commitment to accessibility is baked into the festival's identity, and it's a big part of why it keeps drawing people back year after year.
The week runs seven days and includes live performances from solo artists, duos, and full bands, dance performances, workshops, and open jam sessions. Main stage concerts are held at Centennial Hall at 101 Egan Drive, with evening dances held at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center at 350 Whittier Street — the two venues together give the festival a lively, spread-across-town feel that makes the whole city feel like it's participating. Dance music runs Thursday through Saturday evenings, with multiple bands performing each night alongside a featured guest caller.
The guest artist bookings punch well above what you'd expect from a donation-supported community festival. The 50th anniversary edition in 2025 headlined Rhiannon Giddens with Dirk Powell — a Grammy-winning artist whose appearance at a free community festival speaks to just how seriously the folk world takes this event. The 51st festival in 2026 added a neon stage backdrop, life-size backpack puppets, and a documentary screening of "50 Years of Folk Fest."
Juneau is only accessible by air or ferry, which makes getting there part of the adventure. The Alaska Marine Highway System connects Juneau to communities throughout Southeast Alaska, and planning a Folk Fest trip around a ferry ride through the Inside Passage is a genuinely spectacular way to experience the state.
