Where to Go Bear Viewing from Juneau
Pack Creek
Located on Admiralty Island, Pack Creek is within the Kootznoowoo Wilderness. The island's Tlingit name, Kootznoowoo, meaning "Fortress of the Bear," reflects its significance as a brown bear habitat with over 1,500 brown bears. There are a limited number of permits to visit Pack Creek to minimize human impact. You'll fly from Juneau and spend several hours with your guide, enjoying views from a dedicated viewing area overlooking Pack Creek and / or taking a one-mile hike to an observation tower.
When to Go: Tours are available May – early September. Peak season is July 5 – August 25.
Waterfall Creek
Situated near Admiralty Island on Chichagof Island, Waterfall Creek offers a stunning setting to watch coastal brown bears fishing for salmon against the backdrop of a beautiful waterfall. Like Pack Creek, this area is pure wilderness. Guides will assist you upon disembarking from the float plane and lead you to prime viewing spots.
When to Go: Late July through August, during peak salmon runs.
