Hairy Woodpeckers look very much like a large version of the Downy Woodpecker and their ranges frequently overlap. Because Hairys are larger and have stronger beaks they tend to feed on larger branches and the trunks of trees leaving the smaller stuff to Downy's and other smaller birds.
