The Hames Center

Opened in 1987 as the recreation facility for students attending Sheldon Jackson College, the center is now operated by community volunteers, who offer a wide range of classes and workshops in health promotion, wellness, exercise and sports. Sitka Fine Arts Camp, which took over ownership after closure of the college, uses the building five weeks each summer, and sells club-style memberships to residents to pay the cost of operation. Activities include a range of classes as well as soccer, hockey, basketball, racquetball, martial arts, roller derby and climbing wall.
