2 single bunks, Sleeping loft, Oil heater (#1 stove oil only), Wooden table and benches, Pit-type outhouse, 2 rowboats (NO personal flotation devices). Water available from lake and nearby stream. Treat all water before using.

Mainland above Thomas Bay

Location

On an alpine lake (1514' or 461 m elevation) east of Thomas Bay on the mainland northeast of Petersburg.

Access

18 air miles (29 km) from Petersburg. Float plane when lake is open. Helicopter when lake is frozen.

Terrain

Cabin surrounded by steep peaks of Cosmos Range.

Special Features

Spectacular scenery and photographic opportunities. Mountain goats on steep talus slopes. Plentiful rainbow trout in lake. Sand bar for tent camping or picnicking. Alpine flowers. Rock, ice and glacier climbing throughout the area. Cascade Creek Trail can be reached by boat from cabin. Begins west end of lake (north side of creek), leads to Falls Lake (1157ft (352 m) elevation) and small three-sided shelter (1 mile or 1.6 km). Trail ends at Cascade Creek Cabin (5 miles or 8 km) in Thomas Bay.

Season Of Use

Year-round. Lake usually open from June to end of September.

#1 diesel fuel, personal flotation devices, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher and fire starter. It's a good idea to bring your own water.

Fog and high winds can prevent scheduled flights in or pickups, sometimes for several days. Please check weather forecast prior to departure, and carry extra food. Stove for heating purposes only; burns #1 heating oil. Has brown enamel finish and slightly domed top.
