Set off with a small group and an experienced guide for an unforgettable exploration of the Mat-Su Valley area on foot. Nestled between the Chugach Mountains to the south and the Talkeetna Mountains to the north, there are craggy, snow-capped peaks and rushing rivers everywhere you turn: a classic Alaskan setting that comes packed with a rich history. Plus, the charming community of Palmer, just a 45-minute drive from Anchorage, is a Mecca for beer lovers and makes a great place to finish your hike.
The area offers limited opportunities to go hiking with a guide, so this is your opportunity to take a few hours or a few days and get an insider’s look at this scenic region. Go with Revel and it’s truly your chance to revel—in the mountains, in the community of Palmer, in delicious beer, and in the beauty that is Alaska.
All day hikes include transportation from downtown Palmer. The half-day tour includes snacks and water, and the full-day includes a picnic lunch.
This 4-hour trip can be hiking at a low-, medium- or high-impact pace. You’ll explore a local trail within the town or head out into a state park. Your hike might include the lush Butte Trail; the Palmer Rail Trail, which stretches out along a rushing river; or part of the Pioneer Ridge Trail, which serves up dramatic views of Lazy Mountain.
Looking for even more adventure? Get more fantastic hiking on this extended trip that takes you deeper into the Alaskan backcountry. You may hike to Eska Falls, which tumbles dramatically down a rocky face; hike further up the Pioneer Trail than on the half-day trip; summit Lazy Mountain; or explore trails in Hatcher Pass like Gold Mint. Lunch included.
Hike & Brew
Enjoy 2 to 3 hours of hiking, followed by a couple hours visiting local breweries. The scenic hiking will be similar to the half-day trip. Then you’ll head to two of the innovative breweries in the area, like Bleeding Heart, Arkose, Matanuska Brewing, or Bearpaw River in Wasilla, and enjoy a flight of beer at each. Many breweries offer non-alcoholic beverages as well, and groups can opt for non-alcoholic stops (like a local Kombuchery) if they prefer.
Half-Day Town Tour
Check out the authentically Alaskan town of Palmer and the surrounding area on this 4-hour trip. You’ll do some Insta-worthy scenic driving and walking as you explore the town. Learn the history of Palmer and the surrounding area during a short walk, which could be on the Palmer Rail Trail. Then enjoy a jaw-droppingly scenic drive just outside town; you’ll head into Hatcher Pass or out to the Glenn Highway.
Love hiking and camping? Don’t limit yourself to just a single day: the Palmer area offers up endless beauty and variety. Spend 3 to 5 days on this adventure that’s also an educational trip with a Fairbanks-based scientist. You’ll mostly be hiking off-trail or in the backcountry of the Hatcher Pass area. Group size is a max of 5; you can also reserve it to be for just your group. The guide, all food, and tents are included; BYO backpacks and sleeping bags (or rent them).
Company owner and guide Kierre launched Revel because she felt such a strong connection to the Palmer community and the amazing scenery around it. Indiana-born and always an outdoors lover, she lived in Switzerland and New Zealand, where hiking became a passion. She came to Alaska in 2015 to volunteer with a state parks crew in Willow and only planned to stay the summer, but was seduced by the area’s beauty and friendliness, so she stayed and launched a business that combines everything she’s passionate about.
