Description

One room 14ft x 16ft cedar Pan Abode cabin. 10ft x 10ft meat shed about 100ft from the cabin for hanging moose or storing personal belongings.

Facilities

3 single wooden bunks, 1 double bunk, 1 table and bench, Fuel oil heater, Windsock (15 MPH), Iron fire circle, Log book, Broom and dustpan, Pit outhouse, Meat shed, Airstrip 1800ft x 50ft. Water available from river. Treat all water before using.

Yakutat Forelands

Location

8 air miles (13 km) from Yakutat on east bank of Situk River.

Access

Trail, boat or wheeled aircraft. From Nine Mile Bridge on Forest Highway 10, hike 3 mile (5 km) trail or boat 3.2 miles (5 km) down river (1.5 hour float). Cabin 9.6 miles (15.5 km) up river from Situk Landing (terminus of Lost River Road). Forest Service-maintained airstrip about 300ft from cabin is 1800ft long and 50ft wide. Trail to cabin relatively flat; can flood. Numerous root wads across it make walking moderately difficult. No OHV use. Trail fords Old Situk River. Trail does not follow banks of Situk River.

Terrain

Cabin located in old growth Sitka spruce-hemlock-cottonwood forest with a blueberry understory.

Special Features

Outstanding fishing for rainbow trout, dolly varden, steelhead and salmon (sockeye, pink, king and silver). Cabin frequently used as stopover point for fishing parties and visitors boating river. Large moose population. Hunting good to excellent. Heavy brown bear population. Bald eagles, ravens, gulls along river.

What To Bring

Fuel for the oil heater (#1 stove oil), drinking water, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher and fire starter. Gallon of fuel lasts 2-10 hours, depending on setting. Five-gallon fuel tank (without fuel) provided at cabin.
