Old Road, New Recreation Area

Difficulty

Easy

In a state defined by its lack of roads, locals use all of them, even those that are closed! The old highway - a section of abandoned highway left over after a road re-alignment project in the late 1990’s - parallels this stretch of road for the next three miles, and is used for camping, bike riding and walking. There’s access at either end of the road, but don’t try to drive it—there are major ditches in it. It’s a nice easy walk and place to get out, or even camp. There’s a dumpster at the far end (Mile 118) during the summer, as well as a trailhead, outhouses, and spotting scope. This is a popular, free camping spot for RVs.
