Migrations in May at Odyssey Lodge

From May 5 to May 11, 2026, take a photography tour of a magnificent migration: shorebirds, in the tens of the thousands, flying over the shimmering waters of Kachemak Bay. The unique tour is part of the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival, which happens each May, and is run out of the Odyssey Lodge.

Photograph During the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival

This private, all-inclusive lodge is an ideal base for birding, photography, and coastal adventure, with this guided photography expedition focusing on the festival. All experience levels will pick up new skills on this trip, which includes access to scenic trails and shoreline viewpoints, plus guided photo sessions at sunrise. You’ll learn about the behavior of shorebirds and how to anticipate their action, to capturing fast-moving flocks and composing dramatic images amid the bay’s gorgeous scenery. You’ll also pick up editing tips and have the option to join image-critique sessions. The small group size is ideal for personalized guidance.

Staying at Odyssey Lodge

Then return to the Odyssey Lodge, set across the bay from Homer, where you’ll find easy access to forest and water—ideal places to shoot photos. Stay in comfortable cabins, enjoy handcrafted meals at the lodge’s restaurant, The Meandering Goat, and enjoy sweeping views across the water. The lodge also features access to a wood-burning sauna, recreation room with pool table and video displays, gym, and golf simulator.

Your Photography Guides

You’ll have two photography instructors for this unique excursion. Zack Patton spent eight years building Odyssey Lodge from the ground up. Trained in photography and film, Zack is a dedicated wildlife and landscape photographer, avid birder, skilled outdoorsman, and experienced wilderness guide. And Ayden Keller, who grew up on the East Coast and in Europe, brings a devoted passion for wildlife photography. He’s driven by the desire to give animals a voice through visual storytelling and to inspire protection of their habitats.
