McHugh Creek Recreation Area  (:21)

From Anchorage, travel South on the Seward Highway. Shortly after passing the Potter Weigh Station on your left, you will see a turn out for the McHugh Creek Day Use Area (milepost 111). There is plenty of parking, restrooms, and a picnic area. Be prepared as there is a $5 fee for parking.

With just a short walk from the parking area you will find a beautiful 20 foot water fall. The trailhead starts off paralleling the Turnagain Arm and there are a number of small trails that go to different lookouts. Take the trail to the left for a short distance and you will find the McHugh Trail branching off to the right. The trail zig-zags upward through the woods and provides ever better views of the Turnagain Arm and mountains. The trail parallels the creek and evenutally will take you to its source at McHugh Lake. Both North and South Suicide Peaks will be to the right of the lake, and McHugh Peak to the left. Just past the McHugh Lake is Rabbit Lake which runs out though a different valley.

Be aware and make noise while traveling through the deeper brush areas to avoid unwanted bear contact.
