Matanuska Lake Trailhead

Difficulty

Easy

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance: A little over 4 miles

This trailhead is just 100 yards from Matanuska Lake (the area’s most popular lake), and is wheelchair-accessible down to the lake and the fishing docks—it’s a great walk in the woods, past prime waterfowl habitat. (You might even see loons.) It’s an easy hike, as trails along the lakes are relatively flat compared with those going up and down the moraines. Take a right at the first intersection (M-K Trail) to find to the main hiking and biking trails. It’s pretty flat between the lakes, but there are a few steep sections, particularly at the eastern end of the lake. Most trails starting here also pass through the Matanuska Experiment Farm. This is the main trailhead in Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area. The main parking is closed in winter, but you can park just outside the gate. Be sure to bring a State Parks parking fee or permit.
