Haines is home to traditional and nontraditional artists. Local stone carver Judd Mullady clearly falls into the latter group. His stylized interpretations of animals and people are arrestingly different. Mullady also created the town’s first inuksuk, a stone man figure emblematic of the far north and immortalized on the flag of Nunavat in Canada’s high Arctic. The inuksuk sits a few feet off Main Street, between Second and Third avenues. Mullady’s quirky sculptures dot the town, including a bearded man on the lawn of the Sheldon Museum transformed each Christmas into Santa Claus by the addition of a giant, red felt hat.
