Ruby Eningowuk, an Inupiaq artist, learned to sew from her maternal grandmother Mattie Okpowruk of Shishmaref. She and her mother Nellie Eningowuk, before Mrs. Eningowuk's death, sometimes tried to outdo each other in creating elaborate costumes and exploring traditional forms. Ruby Eningowuk prefers to make items that will be used rather than simply collected.
