Less than one hour from Palmer on the Glenn Highway near Chickaloon, this campground rests on the edge of the mighty Matanuska River. King Mountain is across the river, and there’s great hiking, mountain biking, and four-wheeling in the area.
The campground is pretty open, since bark beetles killed the big, old spruce trees. The campsites attract RVers and campers, and each of the 24 sites has a fire ring and picnic table. There’s potable water at a hand pump.
In late summer, the King River flows a beautiful aquamarine glacier color, and you’ll find great blueberry picking in the alpine around here.
