The confluence of Canyon and Sixmile Creek was known as "The Forks" by early prospectors and was a staging area for miners to get to other gold-bearing creeks in the area. News of successful claims on Canyon and Mills creeks brought more than 3,000 gold seekers to seek their fortunes in 1896.
