Black-legged Kittiwake

Alaska species birds Black legged Kittiwake fishing 5 2291

The Black-legged Kittiwake is a smaller gull that builds its nest on exposed rock ledges, which provide protection from below but leave the eggs and chicks exposed as the parents forage for food. Once the summer breeding season is finished the Kittiwakes return to the open ocean where they spend most of the year. They are unique because they have three toes rather than four.
