A great wilderness lodge invites you into a remote location, but lets you enjoy it in luxury. At Winterlake Lodge—part of the renowned Within the Wild group of lodges owned by Carl and Kirsten Dixon—you get year-round access for a distinct, as well as distinctive, experiences.
Snow or Sun at All-Season Lodge
Come to this first-class lodge during summer, and you’ll land by floatplane; in winter, you’ll land by ski plane. The 15-acre lodge is located 198 trail miles northwest of Anchorage—a 50-minute flight into the wilderness—and features a finger-shaped, two-mile lake. Indeed, this "Finger Lake" is a checkpoint along the famed Iditarod Trail.
Hand-Crafted Cabins, Impeccable Service
You’ll be greeted by a carefully trained staff, and the extremely personal service continues throughout your stay. Within the Wild’s Carl and Kirsten Dixon have a reputation for employing some of Alaska’s best staffers, each of whom have their own specialty to share, whether about flowers, photography, or how to cast a fly-rod.
Winterlake Lodge has just four units—huge, hand-crafted log cabins that feature handmade furniture and thick carpets. Relax inside, or sit outside and soak in the fields of rare chocolate lilies against the alpine view of Trimble Glacier and the shimmering lake.
A Wilderness Experience with Wine Tasting, Cooking Lessons and Massage
At the main lodge, you can enjoy the fireplace, library, game room, yoga room, hot tub and sauna—or even get a free massage from the on-site massage therapist. Owner Kirsten is a Cordon-Bleu-trained chef who regularly hosts a cooking show. You can join her here in the kitchen for a cooking lesson, or go out berry-picking for that night’s dessert. She hosts daily wine and cheese tastings, and prepares great meals with local ingredients.
Rafting and Hiking in Summer, Dog Sledding in the Winter
Even with such nice amenities, you’ll want to get plenty of outdoor time, too. During summers, you can join Carl for a hike along the Iditarod trail and other nearby trails, past beaver dams, wildflower meadows, and meandering streams. You can also go biking, kayaking, fishing or swimming in the lake. They also offer daily adventures near by: floats in the Happy River, fishing in the Canyon Creek area or paddling the scenic Red Creek. You can even arrange to go heli-hiking or have Carl take you on an overnight rafting trip where you'll camp by a fire with the music of the river in the background.
During the winter, there are sled dog tours and instructions on driving a team, cross-country ski excursions, and snowshoe expeditions.
Combo Your Stay with Another Dixon Lodge
The Dixons have built a loyal following here. Guests typically stay 2-3 nights, but some regulars spend a week at the lodge every summer or even take over the entire place. Many guests combine a stay of two nights at Winterlake Lodge with another night at sister property Tutka Bay Lodge.
