Festive, colorful and plenty of both tamales and tequila: Is this really that far north of the border? Downtown Anchorage’s La Cabana offers a friendly atmosphere and a classic (and extensive) Mexican lunch and dinner menu, as well as a Sunday brunch buffet. There’s a large patio for warmer weather, while inside you might find live Mariachi music, dancing, or beer and tequila tastings.
The menu reflects a California-Mex vibe with selections such as Tijuana tacos ($11.25), mole sauce enchiladas ($11.75) and California burritos ($4.25). Since, granted, you’re well north of Tijuana, you’ll also get some Alaska-meets-Mexico options, such as halibut Vera Cruz ($17.75) and seafood enchiladas ($14.75). Lunch also includes classics, some with a Mexican twist, such as fish and chips ($13.95) or a jalapeno cheeseburger ($8.95).
