Of the 800-mile-long Trans Alaska Pipeline, more than half is elevated above the ground. The rest of the pipeline is buried underground. This is a good example of the pipeline descending into the ground as it travels under the road and an excellent photo opportunity. The decision to elevate or bury the pipeline depended on soil conditions. The pipeline was buried in areas where thawing of the ground would not cause soil instability.
