A quaint town with some of the best scenery in Alaska: Seward makes most people’s must-stop list for any Alaska odyssey, and this small inn just outside town gives you easy access to all of it.

Opened in 2010, the five-room inn set on five acres is a 10-minute drive from downtown Seward, the city’s boat harbor and the famed Alaska Sea Life Center. Innkeepers Shane and Gala Davis have lived in Alaska most of their lives: he’s a commercial fisherman much of the year, and she works in healthcare, and they’d always wanted to share their love of being outdoors with travelers. That's one reason they opted not to put TVs in the rooms—to keep people focused on nature as much as possible. Gala’s always happy to help people get set up on tour of the Kenai Fjords National Park, while Shane gives folks tips on where to fish, and lends a hand at the inn’s fish-cleaning station outside.

The inn has five rooms—two suites with queen beds and private bathrooms, and another three bedrooms with queen beds and shared bathrooms. You can book rooms separately, but many people just book the whole house: it can house up to 13 people, which is great for family reunions or multi-generational vacations.

No matter how much space you book, you always have access to a fully equipped kitchen—where you’ll find everything you need to cook and serve breakfast, or that salmon or halibut you just caught. You can also kick back in the living room that offers cable TV, a PC with internet access, and good wireless coverage. Outside, you can use the BBQ and a firepit that’s always stocked with cut wood.

Indeed, you’re far enough from town that you really feel the solitude here, surrounded by forest and mountains. The inn has great views of Mt. Marathon (site of one of the oldest foot races in the U.S., which takes place every July 4), and is only 15 minutes from Exit Glacier, the best drive-up glacier in Alaska. Just hanging out at the inn, you might see the occasional moose amble across the property.

You can choose from the following rooms:

  • Tiehacker Room: queen bed, shared bathroom
  • Seward's Folly Room: queen bed, shared bathroom
  • Mt. Marathon Room: queen size bed with a king-sized view of Mt. Marathon, and shared bathroom
  • Pioneer Suite: Suite on the first floor with queen-sized beds, private bathroom and handicap access
  • Odyssey Suite: Upstairs suite with a queen bed, a large, private wrap-around balcony and private bathroom
