Choose from a variety of exciting helicopter tours out of Talkeetna, which come with amazing views of Denali and surrounding glaciers.
You’ll lift off from Talkeetna, a town halfway between Anchorage and Denali National Park that’s considered the park’s gateway. In fact, some of the best views from Denali are from Talkeetna. There are no wings to peer over with a helicopter, and since you’re surrounded by clear Plexiglass, the views are unimpeded. Also, you’ll have more flexibility than in an airplane—helicopters can fly closer to mountains and treetops, go where planes can’t, and land almost anywhere. And when there are variations in the weather—as there often are in Alaska—helicopters can get off the ground because they can safely fly low and slow.
Pilot’s Choice Flightseeing & Remote Landing
On the company’s most popular tour, the route you take may vary with the weather; having the pilot pick the best route for viewing is one of the benefits of going via helicopter. On a clear day, you’ll fly toward Denali and the Ruth Glacier. If it’s cloudy, you’ll stay on the south side of Denali and fly over Kahlitna Glacier. Or you may fly to the Talkeetna Mountains and land high on a mountaintop. You’ll have about 30 minutes to walk around and soak up the dramatic scenery that surrounds you.
Denali Flightseeing & Landing
Fly toward Denali and take in the stunning, snow-capped beauty of North America’s tallest mountain. You’ll land on a remote mountaintop accessible only by helicopter and have about 15 minutes to walk around and get a unique view of The Great One.
Historic Sheldon Mountain House
Alaska Helicopter Tours is the only company offering tours to the historic Sheldon Mountain House—a unique, exclusive chalet set off by itself at the base of Denali that can be reserved by anyone who truly wants to get away from it all. To reach this special place, you’ll fly over Susitna River Valley from Talkeetna, then head toward Ruth Glacier and the Great Gorge—granite peaks that rise a mile high out of the glacier. You’ll fly by the famous Moose’s Tooth before landing in the Don Sheldon Amphitheater, where you’ll tour the historic mountain house and learn about the surrounding geology and mountains.
Heli Fat Bike Tour
The bikes used on this tour feature 4-inch tires and were made to go anywhere at any time. You and the bikes will take off in the helicopter and head for the mountains overlooking Denali—a dramatic setting that’s perfect for biking. No experience with fat bikes? No problem: Your expert guides will give you an orientation. Then you’ll be free to explore, following your guides’ lead to find the best scenic viewpoints. Whether you’d like to experience a steep descent or a gentle pedal, you’ll find the perfect option.
This tour combines the thrill of a jetboat with the exhilaration of a helicopter ride. In Talkeetna, you’ll board one of the jetboats from longtime Alaska tour operator Mahay’s and speed up the Susitna River, getting a ground-level look at the Alaskan wilderness. About 25 minutes upstream, you’ll hop off for a ¼-mile walk at a cultural site, where you’ll learn about the earliest inhabitants—the Dena’ina Indians and trappers—as well as local flora and fauna. Another hop on the boat takes you to a historic townsite that you can explore. Then it’s time for your helicopter ride, where you’ll look down on the trees and tundra and get a unique look at this gorgeous area as you fly back to Talkeetna.
