Set on Fox Island, the 8 cabins
that make up this remote, native
Alaskan-owned lodge
offer a unique wilderness experience.
Accessible only by boat from
Seward, the Kenai
Fjords Wilderness Lodge is
a true escape from civilization:
basic cabins have no televisions
or TVs. Instead, the focus here
is on nature. Go out on a naturalist-guided
walk, or take a kayak excursion
and look for whales that swim right up to the shore.
Board the boat for the 45-minute
ride across vast Resurrection
Bay, enjoying an all-you-can-eat
salmon feast along the way. You’ll
arrive at your secluded cabin
in the woods, and with just 8
cabins that can accommodate only
22 people, you’re guaranteed
an intimate experience. Cabins
are named after marine animals,
and each has a quilt of that
animal hanging on the wall. Don’t
expect anything luxurious, but
you will find a bed, private
bath, table and chairs, propane
heating, and electric lights
- and
everything is wind and solar
powered.
Despite the remote location,
you won’t lack for activities.
Go on a walking beach tour with
the lodge’s naturalist and
admire the unique flat rocks; make
a unique ringing sound when you
walk on them and a twinkling sound
when the tide washes up on them.
Make a campfire in the evening
overlooking the bay. Be careful
not to stay up too late, since
it doesn’t get dark until
after midnight. In the morning
head for the water. Kayakers will
be in heaven out here; paddle out
and explore the many coves that
line the island. And keep an eye
out for humpback whales, as well
as the orca whales that swim up
to shore and scratch their bellies
on the rocks.
