Portage Glacier Cruise Tour
Take an unforgettable glacier cruise
right up to the face of a glacier,
just 50 miles south of Anchorage. Spending
an hour on the comfortable MV
Ptarmigan, with narration
from the US Forest Service, you’ll
navigate around bobbing glaciers and
motor to within 300 feet of the mammoth
wall of ice called Portage Glacier
(one of Alaska’s most popular
attractions). Listen for the unmistakable
rumbling of a calving glacier, waiting
for the moment when a huge block of
ice crashes into the sea.
Departing from Anchorage, you’ll
take a deluxe motor coach down around
Turnagain Arm, keeping an eye out for
Beluga whales, then continue along one
of America’s most scenic roads,
the Seward Highway. Stop at the Begich-Boggs
Visitor Center and browse the exhibits
on glaciology. Then board the MV Ptarmigan,
an 80-foot, 200-passenger heated ship.
After your cruise, which lasts approximately
1 hour, you’ll return to the
motor coach and on your way back to
Anchorage stop at Alyeska Ski Resort
for lunch on your own and an optional
tram ride up Mt. Alyeska for stunning
views.

the scenic Seward Highway to Portage
Glacier. Stop at the Begich-Boggs Visitor
Center to see the glaciology exhibits.
Then board the mv Ptarmigan for
an unforgettable 1-hour cruise across
iceberg-dotted Portage Lake. On the
way back to Anchorage, stop at the
Alyeska Ski Resort for a 1-hour lunch
on your own and an optional tram ride
to the top of Mt. Alyeska.

the placid Portage Lake, about an hour
south of Anchorage, to Portage Glacier.
It is truly worth the drive! The cruise
takes only one hour, but it could be
the most impressive 60 minutes of your
life. Watch for huge chunks of ice
to break away and crash in to the lake
as the MV Ptarmigan weaves through
iceberg-dotted waters. This is the
