If you’d like to spend the day fishing with a third-generation Alaska fisherman, then give Bruce Johnstone a call at True Alaska Charters. Captain Bruce is one of those Ketchikan fisherman who specializes not only outstanding fishing, but in exploring Alaska just as his grandfather and great-grandfather did before him.

The Johnstone family has a long, proud heritage of guiding in Alaska. Bruce’s grandfather – also named Bruce – developed a way of interfacing with the wilderness that you can’t get from a travel guide – you need longevity in the area. As a bear-hunter, the elder Bruce Johnstone started early, shooting his first bruin at the age of 12 and taking down the famous “Old Groaner” in a story that is embedded in Ketchikan culture even today.

Although his grandson Captain Bruce is now partly retired, he’s still at the helm of many a True Alaska Charter. He can regale you with the story of “Old Groaner,” along with his own adventure stories of growing up and working as a fishing guide in Ketchikan.
