Location

The cabin is located on the North Shore of Trapper Joe Lake.

Access

Primary access to the cabin is by float plane, ski plane, snowmobile and skiing. This cabin can also be accessed from August 10 to mid October by seasonally driving 22 miles down the Mystery Creek Road (when the gate is open) and then by hiking or canoeing to the cabin. There is no designated hiking trail to the cabin. Contact the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge for gate information (907) 262-7021. Note: Four wheel drive vehicles are recommended for driving the Mystery Creek Road however ATV'S are not permitted on the Refuge.

Terrain

Cabin is in a fairly flat area, overlooking the lake. Surrounded by scattered trees, shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers.

Special Features

This cabin offers seclusion and fishing for rainbow trout along with sightseeing, wildlife viewing and exploring. The cabin is also popular for a wilderness retreat, wildlife viewing, fishing, ice fishing and a stop over for snowmobile travelers in the winter. Contact the Kenai Refuge for snowmobiling regulations in this area.

The seclusion of this cabin necessitates being prepared to handle any emergency situation. Inclement weather may cause an unexpected extension of the trip. Bringing a personal cooking stove is recommended. Carry in potable water or boil surface water 5 minutes before drinking. Remember to pack out your trash. Enjoy, but help protect this historical building.
