By shallow draft boat or float plane, 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Wrangell

Terrain

Primarily ferns, salmonberry with willow, alder along slough and valley bottom; Sitka spruce, western hemlock, cottonwood around cabin; extensive meadows adjacent to slough.

Spectacular views of Popof Glacier, Mt. Basargin, surrounding mountains, Shakes Slough. Hot Springs Trail accessible by boat only Brown bear, black bear, moose, mountain goat in adjacent mountain ranges Cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden (June-Oct) Chief Shakes Hot Springs about 4 miles (6.4 km) up Stikine River on Kitili Slough accessible by boat only. Shakes Lake and Glacier 3 miles (5 km) north. Shakes Slough #2 Cabin located a few hundred feet north.

What To Bring

Fuel for the oil heater (#1 stove oil or kerosene only), sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, fire starter and rubber boots. It's a good idea to bring your own water.

14ft or higher tide generally required to cross Stikine River tideflats. Local knowledge of river conditions and experience operating shallow draft boats may allow crossing tideflats on smaller tides. Occasionally poor weather can result in extended stays; users should be prepared for this.
