Experience the stunning Alaskan coastlines
Enjoy comfortable quarters, gourmet meals, and thoughtful amenities in the pristine natural beauty of the Alaska coastline.
The many opportunities for exploration in this area and our custom sailing itineraries make each trip unique. Discover new areas each day and experience breathtaking vistas of mountains and glaciers, all while searching for wildlife.
Kayak along the coastline with your guide to learn about the intertidal zone up close, go ashore on a zodiac and explore by foot, take a turn at setting and trimming the sails, relax on deck or read a book inside with a hot mug of tea.
A sailing expedition aboard Extraordinary offers a more intimate experience than a day trip or a traditional cruise. Since trips are exclusive (just you and your party, up to six guests total), we can tailor the voyage itinerary to your interests - whether that’s seeking out the best light for photography, spending more time in search of wildlife or viewing glaciers, or focusing on your sailing skills.
Voyage in comfort
S/V Extraordinary is a 65-foot cutter-rigged, steel sailboat built in 1998 in Ketchikan. It has made its way all around North America, and came back to Alaska by way of the Northwest Passage in 2015.
On deck, there is plenty of room to walk around and a clear, large enclosure provides a comfortable viewing area, protected from the elements. Below decks there is ample living space, a full galley, a roomy salon and dining area, hot showers and three staterooms for guests; one with a queen sized bed, the others, two twin bunks.
Meals are a special affair on all voyages with Sail Extraordinary. Sit back and enjoy gourmet meals prepared by our chef. From simple fare to culinary adventure, we will cook to suit your preferences. Plenty of freshly baked treats complement a varied, tasty menu. Non-alcoholic beverages and meals are included on every charter.
One of the major advantages of exploring by sailboat is that it is very environmentally-friendly. Extraordinary uses a small amount of fuel (about 2 to 3 gallons per day) to run the engine and generator, but otherwise is powered by the wind. With only the sound of the water rippling under the hull, sailing is a blissfully quiet way to travel.
Explore with experienced crew
Captain Brent Pikolas joins the Sail Extraordinary team after nearly two decades of exploring wild Alaska as a guide, naturalist, and licensed USCG captain. In winter, he takes those explorations to the Southern Hemisphere on trips to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula as a guide and zodiac driver. Brent currently calls Seward, Alaska, home, where since 2012 he has been the Lead Captain of a fleet of passenger vessels focused on wildlife and glacier tours. He has a degree in Environmental Education from Prescott College, which led him to countless days in the field all throughout the Western US, Mexico, Canada, and Nepal. Brent is extremely passionate about the natural world and loves to share his in-depth knowledge whenever he can. When he is not sailing, kayaking, and fishing around coastal Alaska, you can find Brent surfing on the coast of El Salvador.
First Mate Emily Burke is thrilled to share the rugged and inspiring coastlines of Alaska with you. She’s been exploring the region for years by kayak as a guide and naturalist, and has over a decade of traditionally rigged tall ship sailing experience. Since graduating from Harvard with a degree in ecology and evolutionary biology, Emily has worked at remote research sites studying Adélie penguins in Antarctica, surveying coral reefs in Indonesia, and teaching marine science to college students in New Zealand and throughout the Caribbean. Whether she’s exploring ridgelines or tidelines, Emily brings an infectious enthusiasm for adventure and the natural world that engages everyone around her.
Brent and Emily both have Wilderness First Responder certifications for backcountry medicine.
