Lazy Mountain Winter Trails

Distance

2 miles

Difficulty

Easy

Only a few miles outside of Palmer, this popular winter recreation area features groomed cross-country skiing trails that are also open to snowshoeing and skijoring. The upper trails are designed for novices, while the lower trails are meant for experts.

If you really want to go big—and have good weather—access the Lazy Mountain Trail and climb high into the alpine, with views of the Matanuska and Knik River valleys.

(Note: To avoid a treacherous section, follow the Lazy Moose Trail; it’s longer, but offers an easy way around the steep, eroded portions of the original trail. It splits off near the beginning of the trail and rejoins it about half way up.)

Directions: Head east on the Old Glenn Highway from Palmer and take a left on Clark-Wolverine Road. Go ½-mile and turn right on Huntley Road. Follow that to the end and turn right on Mountain Trail to reach the paved trailhead parking lot.

Features: Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing

*Take note Moose frequent this area in winter. Make your presence known. Keep dogs on leash and/or under your control.
