"A Hiada-Way" owner Carole Okamoto invites travelers into small-town Alaska life with her gracious hosting and story telling. Limiting her apartment rental to one unit, she's made sure guests not only experience privacy and quiet, but also get a peek into life in Soldotna.

Carole will ask you to join her around the campfire in the evening for a cocktail or dinner, and then share stories about fishing, tanning furs and Alaska history. Or she'll direct you to the best clamming spot or recommend guides who know the best fishing holes.

On the Kenai Peninsula for 15 years, she and her husband opened "A Hiada-Way" apartment rental in 2006. Located 12 miles outside of Soldotna, the apartment is modern and bright, with hardwood floors and ceilings. It's a favorite of couples, but can sleep up to four, with a king-size bed and rollaway. Carole, an Alaska Native, has decorated the place with Haida and tribal art, as well as Alaska wildlife prints.

Even though she might invite you to dinner, "A Hiada-Way" doesn't offer food service, so bring your own food. It has a full kitchen with plenty of work space. And there's a grill on the deck. The apartment also includes cable television, DVD and Wifi, and a washer and dryer.

There's a nice yard and large deck, which overlooks the Kasilof River. From here, you can spot swans, geese, cranes and eagles, and the occasional moose or bear.

But for all its quiet, "A Hiada-Way" is centrally located, close by the Kenai River and its famed salmon runs, as well as the coast. It's two hours from Seward and 1.5 hours from Homer. And there's a coffee shop within walking distance, and a small general store a few miles away.

Lots of fishermen stay here, and you can store your catch in her chest freezer for $2 per day. Carole will let you borrow her clamming shovels, and is happy to direct you to hikes, photography spots or help you find local tours and guides.
