Renting a Car in Nome

You can walk pretty much anywhere within the city of Nome, and a $5 taxi fare will get you to and from the airport.

If you want to explore more of the area’s 300-mile gravel road system, you’ll need a vehicle. None of the major car rental agencies operate in Nome, but there are rental vans and 4-wheel drive vehicles available locally.

Note: The road system is open about half the year. During winter, it’s generally closed due to weather conditions. In summer, demand for rental vehicles is high, so be sure to book early.

Where to rent:

  • Aurora Inn: Stampede Vehicle Rentals is run out of the Aurora Inn, but you don’t have to be a guest to rent. About 60 vehicles are available, mostly trucks and SUVs.
  • Dredge 7 Inn: To rent from the Dredge 7, you must be staying at the inn with a confirmed room reservation. Take a taxi from the airport and pick up your Jeep, King cab truck or 15-passenger van at the Inn.
  • Other: If you’re staying at a bed and breakfast, check with the proprietor. Some offer a vehicle rental option.
