Step aboard Gray Line of Alaska’s
deluxe motor coach for a fully narrated
tour of Alaska’s largest city.
Full of interesting sites, great scenery,
and history, Anchorage makes for a
great half-day tour. It’s also
a great way to get your bearings and
decide what places to re-visit. Drive
past key spots and take an extended
tour of the Alaska Native Heritage
Center.
Your tour will pass attractions like
the Log Cabin Visitor Center, the Alaska
Railroad Depot, and the Museum of Art & History.
Get a peek at Resolution Park and the
Captain Cook Monument as well as Ship
Creek Viewpoint, which overlooks Cook
Inlet.
Your one stop will be the 25-acre
Alaska Native Heritage Center, and
this is where you’ll spend the
most time. Here you’ll walk around
interactive exhibits that feature traditional
dress and customs. Check out basketry,
dance, boat making, and beadwork. And
don’t miss the model village
homes set around a lake. The center
is a prime opportunity to explore the
rich cultural history of Anchorage
and Alaska and gain a deeper understanding
of the different elements that have
come together to create this unique
land.
City Tour and Portage
Glacier Cruise Tour
If you have all day, combine the city
tour with a glacier cruise on Portage
Lake. In a full, but memorable 10-hour
day, you’ll also drive 50 miles
south of Anchorage along the scenic
Seward Highway and tour the Begich-Boggs
Visitor Center’s exhibits on
glaciology. Then board the comfortable,
200-passenger mv Ptarmigan for a narrated
trip that motors to within 300 feet
of the mammoth wall of blue ice called
Portage Glacier. You’ll navigate
around bobbing glaciers and listen
for the unmistakable rumbling of a
calving glacier, waiting for the moment
when a house-sized block of ice crashes
into the sea. On your return to Anchorage,
you’ll stop at Alyeska Ski Resort,
for lunch on your own and an optional
tram ride up Mt. Alyeska for stunning
views.
