Monkey flower Monkey Flower

Mimulus guttatus
Scrophulariaceae/Figwort Family

Monkey Flower grows along the edges of streams, lakes and wet rocky slopes. It is a sprawling plant with upright branches 8-16" tall. The stem leaves are round to oblong, toothed along the edges and dark green. The flowers are bright yellow, about 1" long, snap dragon-like, and have a lower lip with brownish-red spots, which act as well-marked landing platform for bumblebees. The flowers are large, but few. The leaves are edible both raw and cooked.
