Herring Gull

Alaska species birds herring gull

Herring Gulls are what most people picture when they think of sea gulls. This species is mostly white and can be found throughout North America. They usually prefer to drink fresh water, but have developed a special adaptation in the form of glands over their eyes that strain salt from seawater. If you chance to see one up close after it's had a drink you may notice it "crying", as it processes the saline solution.
