If you don't want to rent a car and if you're looking to avoid the cost of the train, bus is the way to go. You won't find Greyhound, but rather a series of small bus companies that can get you to most of the highlights in good comfort. Most vehicles offer plenty of legroom, big picture windows and space to stow extra gear. Hop-on, hop-off service may be available, too—great for flexible scheduling.

Alaska Park Connection Motorcoach
The most established and largest. These deluxe motor coaches have lots of legroom and picture windows; this is the only line to do same-day service between Denali and Seward.

Alaska Direct Bus Lines
15- and 21-passenger vans with reclining seats offer low fares to Fairbanks, and it makes frequent restroom stops (every 2 hours or less).

This bus uses flag-stop service for all routes, and offers a lot of convenience: same-day connection between Anchorage and Fairbanks and Denali backcountry lodge buses. They have extra room for gear and luggage; it’s also the cheapest fare between Anchorage and Denali.

The Stage Line
Homer-based service in a 15-passenger van with trailer connects you to Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage.

Seward Bus Lines
These buses (14 passengers) and vans (22 passenger) offer few hassles (easy cancellations) and the cheapest fare between Seward and Anchorage.

Schedule: Seward to Anchorage daily in summer and Monday through Saturday in winter; Anchorage to Whittier runs only on cruise days during the summer.
